When you have a mental illness, the odds are pretty good that you are going to need some sort of support from someone.
You are going have to be able to work, be able get around and communicate.
Unfortunately, most mental health services are not as comprehensive as they should be.
To be honest, I was a bit of a sucker for the new mental health care system in Oregon, but I had a hard time finding the information I needed.
It was frustrating, but it also gave me a bit more confidence in my own abilities.
I was fortunate enough to have a lot of friends who were already on the fence about having children, so I knew that if I needed help, I would get it.
At first, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to use a support group.
But, after spending some time in a support-oriented program, I found myself getting more comfortable talking to others about my situation and sharing my struggles with them.
Even though I had to wait until my son was older to go through treatment, it was a relief to know that I wasn`t alone.
While I was not able to take full advantage of the new support services, I did learn a lot.
If you have been diagnosed with a mental disorder and are in need of support, contact the Oregon Department of Mental Health at 800.621.6874 or your local county mental health center for help.
If you are considering taking advantage of an existing mental health service in your state, call the National Alliance on Mental Illness at 800-273-TALK (8255).
