When you’re suffering from the flu, you might be tempted to purchase some extra socks for warmth, but for all intents and purposes, it’s best to avoid them.
Allina Health’s latest research suggests you should always wear warm socks to avoid a cold.
Allin has studied people who had contracted the flu in Australia, including the vast majority of people who are already sick and all of whom wear their socks on at least a regular basis.
Allinta has found that people who wear their winter socks on average five to 10 times a week have the lowest chance of contracting the flu.
In contrast, people who only wear them on the rare occasions they do get sick have a very high chance of catching the virus.
This has led Allina to advise all Australians to wear at least three pairs of socks each winter, which is the recommended minimum.
The research has also found that the most effective way to reduce your risk of getting the flu is to keep up your routine, even if you’re not currently feeling well.
“We’ve found that cold weather socks are very effective at preventing the spread of influenza, and as well as providing warmth, they’re very easy to change,” said Allina’s chief executive, Paul Hock.
“In fact, the coldest winter socks are usually the least effective.”
How cold is cold?
Allintas research has shown that wearing your socks on the cold is the best way to prevent influenza.
“When people are cold and their feet are freezing, they don’t have as much airway to breathe so they’ll get cold,” said Hock, who added that people wearing socks on cold days were less likely to catch the flu because their body was able to keep the temperature down.
“If you’re in the house and you’re cold, then you’re likely to get cold feet.”
In order to reduce the chances of catching influenza, it is important to wear warm clothing in cold weather, so you don’t become cold to the touch.
You can wear a jacket or hoodie, or a t-shirt or hood.
The only way to be sure you’re warm is to wear a pair of gloves and a hat.
If you’re wearing gloves, keep them at least two inches above the skin on the hands, forearms and forefeet.
A hat is also essential for preventing infection.
“As long as you’re putting on a hat, your gloves will keep you warm,” Hock said.
“But hats can get really hot in the winter and you can get very cold.”
What to wear in cold temperatures The advice for wearing cold weather clothing is similar to what you’d find in Australia.
If your feet are covered with cold water or ice, then they should be wrapped in cold clothing.
If it’s too cold to wear gloves, then keep your hands bare.
And if you wear a hat or hood, don’t try to put it on your head because it could catch the virus and cause infection.
However, if you have an ice mask on and the temperature is below freezing, then don’t wear a cold weather jacket.
If cold weather is approaching, wear a warm weather jacket and don’t put it over your head.
If wearing gloves and gloves alone isn’t enough to keep you from getting sick, consider using a warm mask or masking tape.
This will help to keep your skin warm.
“The warmer you are the better, and masking tapes are ideal,” said Dr Amy Burd, a consultant infectious diseases specialist at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RANZCP).
“They are extremely effective and they can keep your face warm.”
What if you get the flu?
The research suggests that you should never go without wearing a cold-weather pair of cold- weather socks at all times.
It’s best not to wear cold socks at home and in the cold outdoors.
Instead, wear warm boots and gloves when going outside or in cold conditions.
“It’s best that you avoid cold weather altogether,” said RANZCGP infectious disease specialist Dr Kate Williams.
“You need to be comfortable, comfortable with the cold weather in order to get the cold and you need to warm yourself up.”
What’s your advice for someone who’s feeling ill?
In the US, people usually need to wear their gloves during cold weather conditions.
However in Australia and New York, the US government recommends wearing gloves only in the colder months.
“They’re actually quite effective at keeping your cold from getting into your mouth, so it’s important to remember to keep gloves on,” said Williams.
She also recommends wearing a mask when outdoors, even in the middle of the night.
“For example, in New York City you can walk on the sidewalks, wear your gloves, and then walk away from the sidewalk and wear your mask,” said Burd.
“This is quite effective and it’s much less likely that you get cold, especially in the daytime.”
