Posted November 22, 2018 08:50:18The opioid crisis is affecting Americans in all kinds of ways.
Here are a few things you need to know to stay safe.
CDC recommends that all adults be tested for fentanyl and opiates.
For the most part, you don’t need to worry about being overdosed, but you should definitely get tested if you or someone you know is.
If you have been drinking alcohol, it’s a good idea to get tested.
The CDC recommends that anyone who takes a drug that contains fentanyl or opiates that is close to a needle should get tested for that drug and then keep an eye on it for signs of overdose.
People who inject drugs should be tested.
If you inject fentanyl, ask your doctor or pharmacist for instructions.
It’s also a good rule of thumb to check for any new signs of fentanyl or opioid abuse before you start taking an opiate, or even if you’re on opioids for the first time.
Dr. David McEwen, a professor of medicine at the University of Florida and a nationally recognized expert on opiate use and addiction, said in an interview with the Orlando Sentinel that the new fentanyl crisis has been “devastating.”
“We’re seeing the impact of fentanyl being ingested, which means that we have fentanyl in our body, so it’s not just fentanyl, it has fentanyl in it,” McEwan said.
He said the drug is “now a gateway drug” for other opioids.
“You have to ask, ‘Are these people getting opioids for treatment?
Are they being taken into a drug rehab facility?'”
“They are taking the fentanyl and they are not getting the opioids.
The opioid abuse is going to continue.
That’s not the way we are going to recover.”
The problem, experts say, is that there’s no good way to prevent overdose.
The Drug Enforcement Administration is launching a national task force to look into how to better detect and respond to the drug’s abuse.
There is a national emergency declaration in effect for all states and the District of Columbia.
But the federal government says the emergency is temporary.
The Department of Health and Human Services is also coordinating with the National Guard and other federal agencies to help with the response.
“The federal government has declared a state of emergency in some of the states,” McEnroe said.
“There’s a nationwide response in the states.”
It will take time to get the emergency declared nationwide, McElynks warning.
