AARP Health Insurance is backing Democratic Senate candidate Doug Jones in Alabama, and the national group is making an investment of $1 million into his campaign.
Jones, who is seeking his party’s nomination for a U.S. Senate seat, says he will push for “an affordable, quality, and secure health care system.”
He has promised to expand access to care to more Americans and to reduce costs.
Jones’ health care plan includes a $1.2 trillion expansion of Medicaid, a $10 billion expansion of Medicare and $1 trillion for an insurance company called AARP.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee says its PAC has pledged to spend $10 million in Alabama in the run up to Jones’ announcement, and has raised nearly $9 million from the state’s top conservative donors.
Democrats, however, have slammed the GOP candidate’s health care plans, arguing that they would leave millions without coverage.
Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., said his party has “failed the American people” and that Democrats are “the ones who have to pay the price.”
He also said he will not support a bill that cuts Medicaid by $880 billion over 10 years.
